19 Oktober 2018 BMT's design on mini submarine (image : BMT) BMT Wins Consulting Engineering Contract in Thailand to Support Royal Thai Navy Midget Submarine Programme BMT, the leading international design, engineering and risk management consultancy, has been awarded a contract to support the Royal Thai Navy’s (RTN) new midget submarine programme from its offices in Bath, UK. BMT has been contracted to recommend submarine-specific engineering management best practice to help the RTN minimise risk during the design phase.  BMT’s UK defence businesses have supported the UK’s in-service submarine fleet and submarine design programmes since 1993.  BMT has acted in a client advisory capacity to several overseas governments, and also supports domestic submarine acquisition and in-service support programmes from its offices in Australia and Canada. 08 Oktober 2018 BRP Tarlac LD602 and Kilo 877 submarine (photos : PN) The Philippine Navy contingent currently in Russia for a goodwill visit headed by Naval Task Force 87 head Captain Florante N. Gagua visited one of the Russian Pacific Fleet diesel submarines on October 3. The Russian submarine, Komsomolsk-on-Amu 877 was positioned near the location where the BRP Tarlac (LD601) was docked. “Some Philippine Navy personnel were able to witness how the said submarine was positioned into her present station,” the Philippine Navy said. “Together with the selected and privileged members of the PN contingent are the media personnel from the Philippines who were also allowed to visit the submarine. The event started around 2:00 O’clock and ended at 4:00 O’clock in the afternoon (local time). A total of 24 personnel (16 military and 8 civilian) benefited the said tour,” it added. 03 Oktober 2018 Australia new subs (image : DCNS) Defence Minister Christopher Pyne has moved to hose down concerns that the $50 billion ­Future Submarines project has become mired in contract disputes between Australia and the subs’ French manufacturer, Naval Group. “The submarine project is on schedule, it is on budget,’’ Mr Pyne said yesterday. “The strategic partnering agreement is the second agreement that lasts for many decades into the future. There is no delay to the program or the schedule or the budget. The reality is that that negotiation is on track.” The Strategic Partnering Agreement is the main header document governing the exchange of sensitive commercial information between Naval Group, the government and Lockheed Martin, the weapon’s system integrator. It is the latest addition to the country’s expanding deep-sea surveillance programme, and aside from targeting submarines – most operate at a depth of less than 500 metres – it could also be used to collect data on the world’s oceans. Project Guanlan, meaning “watching the big waves”, was officially launched in May at the Pilot National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology in Qingdao, Shandong.
